PM Book Club – Louisville: Free event & PDU! Join us as we discuss Angela Duckworth’s book, Grit. We’ll discuss the author’s ideas around what characteristics influence successful outcomes. Things will kick off with a 10 minute overview of key concepts from the book. This overview will enable everyone to participate whether you’ve read the book or not. The rest of the time will be small group discussion guided by a series of questions to explore how the book’s concepts can be applied to our real world projects. Join us for an interactive way to learn, earn PDUs, and network with your peers in the region! About the Event Leadership There is a profound difference between leadership and management. Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike) was a leader par excellence; in the face of varied egos, conflict, multiple personal and National agendas, he maintained a fixed course in achieving an objective. Thoren Oakenshield, on the other hand, was a manager: his team of dwarves (and a one consulting hobbit) confronted and overcame issues in achieving a single objective. Ike used a combination of influence models to resolve conflict, creating a common vision while instilling shared responsibility. Thoren led his team with single-minded pursuit of his objective overcoming many obstacles combining his resources and their disparate skills into a single cohesive team. In many respects, leaders may be thought of as strategic where managers might be considered more tactical. Managers spend their resources to achieve a goal where leaders may use their resources to help customers vision a future state, from which the goal is derived. This session will focus on comparing leaders and managers, identifying the various attributes and tools effectively used by both.
